Short-cycle Higher Vocational College is part of the Educational Centre Novo mesto and it is a distinctive and recognized educational institution. It focuses on the excellence of studies and on the quality of professional and research work. This has been an important factor for the development of the local economy and the service sector in the regional and in the global space for more than 20 years. Vocational college works closely with employers: our main goal is to provide high quality education by establishing solid partnerships with the companies that participate in carrying out practical training and help put theory into practice.  Such partnerships are comparable to the European standards of good practice and are particularly welcome in the field of vocational education which is to train students for practical needs. Planning, developing and modernizing study programs is based on the needs of the labor market, thus ensuring the modernity of the study, and high employability of graduates. Together with well-experienced lecturers and training experts our objective is to adapt the educational programme to the needs of the labour market and the economy in Slovenia.
The program of cosmetics is based on cosmetics services and wellness and its main aim is to educate and train students to be able to meet the high expectations of clients. Graduates get a wide professional-theoretical and practically useful knowledge for working in cosmetics and wellness. They upgrade their knowledge about skin and are trained to recognize disease conditions and diagnose cosmetic problems. They also learn about the composition, usage and preparation of cosmetic products. It is very important to get familiarized with face and body care using appropriate cosmetic products and to learn how to use more demanding appliances such as IPL, radio frequency, ultrasound lipolysis apparatus. Furthermore, it is essential for students to know something about the aesthetic arrangement of the customer in the field of makeup and manicure. In different courses they explore how important etiquette, communication and organization skills are and how to advise clients about healthy lifestyle. Finally, they cannot do without some basic knowledge about entrepreneurship and marketing.
In the open curriculum, you can learn much more on how to provide cosmetic care services to clients. Students choose one of the elective modules. In the Special Pedicure module students learn special pedicure techniques to handle the problems of ingrown nails, pinching clamps, provide nail prosthetics. ... Students practice on clients with diabetes who have leg and foot problems. In the Massage Techniques module students practice reflexology massage and alternative massage techniques, in particular, Ayurveda, Indian massage, massage with warm stones and shells. In the Healthy lifestyle module students learn about the importance of physical movement, healthy diet, mental activity and personal relaxation in order to advise the client and suggest a healthy lifestyle. In the Aesthetics module students learn how to use different materials, procedures, planning and implementing special makeup and manicure. In the subject Special techniques in manicure students learn nail shaping and painting, and permanent lacquering on models, they practice special make-up techniques for different occasions on models, learn the basics of face pack and special effects techniques.

Form and duration of the study

Full-time studies

They last two years and students get awarded by 120 credits (ECTS). The courses are organized on weekdays. The academic year involves 34 weeks of educational work, of which 24 weeks of education and training at school and 10 weeks of work placement in companies or in inter-company education centers.

Part-time studies

These studies are custom-made to meet the needs of adult students ; they last two and a half years and students get awarded by 120 ECTS credits. The courses are carried out twice or three times a week in the afternoon using a system of successive subjects (max. two subjects in parallel.)

The employment prospects of our graduates are excellent, since they can be employed in spas and wellnesses, shops, beauty salons. A cosmetician may, on the basis of acquired generic and specific vocational knowledge and skills obtained in the course of studies, be employed in the following positions and working areas:
  • head of a beauty salon,
  • head of wellness,
  • self-employed cosmetician,
  • consultant for healthy life and well-being witht heemphasis on healthy diet, physical and mental activities and relaxation,
  • organiser/coordinator of project work in the field of cosmetic service and healthy life style,
  • expert on aroma therapy,
  • expert on working with demanding apparatus in cosmetics,
  • expert on special pedicure techniques masseur performing different massage techniques and alternative massages,
  • marketing expert on cosmetic services, apparatus and products.
